The killing heat of summer is passing so now is a good time to get back into the deepest parts of the desert for solitude. Most of us seek peace but fear true solitude as if we'll find monsters within or our childhood fear of 'something' under the bed.
Many of the old desert towns face inward, turning their communal backs to the empty wild- sort of like surrounding a welcoming campfire that keeps away the night. Beatty is one of those friendly towns. A community both self sufficient and generous; Gateway to Death Valley with designated Burro Parking and incredible chili. You have to eat at the HAPPY BURRO. The food and the owners are worth the visit.
Beatty is that welcoming stop, a place to pause, have fellowship and count the cost before entering the great and terrible void where you might meet yourself and hear your own thoughts.
That's not so bad you know. You don't be afraid to pursue peace. You don't need the noise of the world to be safe. Go to Death Valley, don't take your phone. Now is a good time.
In honor of Nevada's 150th birthday, I've placed a number of geocaches with special coins at key places from Treasures of Darkness so you can follow the story and have your own great adventure.
